The Bliss Jockeys Opened for The Villalobos Brothers @ Mercury Lounge!! 1.17.2014

The Bliss Jockeys What a thrill! The Bliss Jockeys opened for international touring sensations The Villalobos Brothers during their NY appearance this past week at Mercury Lounge! Altogether both bands, along with our friends in Victor V Gurbo & Co., filled the venue and provided a night of explosive music for the near-capacity audience.

A big THANK YOU to the 243 people who turned out and made this night a HUGE success for us! We were just 7 shy of a capacity crowd-- the night was an unqualified triumph: the audience, bands, venue and bookers were all happy, and eager for a repeat performance. Details to be announced soon!

The Bliss Jockeys Rock the 20th Annual Jammy Awards!! 4.26.2013

The Bliss Jockeys The Bliss Jockeys performed at the 20th Annual Jammy Awards, live at The Cutting Room, NYC!!

Since this was an awards show, the band put on a concise 20-minute set and powered through high-energy renditions of four of our best-known songs: Memphis -> Looking For Someone -> Transcendental Cowboy -> Through The Middle

By the time we were done, the audience was fired up and blissed-out, shouting and singing-along to the music. In other words: Mission Accomplished!

Phil's Birthday Show-- The Bliss Jockeys Rock The Bitter End!! 07.09.2012

The Bliss Jockeys On June 21st, Phil and the band played a triumphant show to a packed house at NY's legendary rock club, The Bitter End!!

Starting precisely at 7pm on Thurs, 6/21, The Bliss Jockeys took the stage and delivered a solid 60-minute set overflowing with their usual brand of high-energy tunes, complete with tight gospel harmonies, jazzy guitar licks courtesy of Phil's brother Josh, and bluesy harmonica, courtesy of Phil himself.

In a set overflowing with fan favorites, the band engaged the audience on such songs as Transcendental Cowboy, Through The Middle and 25 Miles. A clear highlight of the night was the gospel choir stealing the spotlight for a stunning rendition of Leonard Cohen's Hallelulah, a long-time Phil favorite. Afterward, band and audience alike moved on to the nearby Grisly Pear for a long night of drunken debauchery...

A big THANK YOU to everyone who turned out to make this night a HUGE success!! What say we do it all again next year!?! :-)

Musical Brothers-- Introducing Josh Friedman, Lead Guitarist! 05.15.2012

The Bliss Jockeys Yes, the new lead guitarist of The Bliss Jockeys is none other than my brother, Josh Friedman!

Now that Josh is back in NY full-time, I'm extremely excited to include him as a full-time regular member of the band. Josh raises the level of everything we do in The Bliss Jockeys, and brings his unparalleled improvisational abilities-- as well as many other assets-- to the band's musical toolbox.

Basically, the only downside is the now-endless proliferation of "Who's the monkey" arguments... ;-p

The Bliss is Back-- The Bliss Jockeys Return with 3 Great Performances!! 05.08.2012

We're only getting started!!

Coming in the New Year: The Return Of...!?! 12.31.2011

Phil Robinson

Every once in a while, you realize that the things that had been sustaining you for so long-- the things that got you to where you are now-- have become the very things that hold you back from taking the NEXT step on your journey.

Those moments, though challenging, offer the opportunity to 'refresh' your life-- to put away those involvements which are no longer vital to you, in order to make room for new life to grow.

In 2011, I've been doing just that. This year, I've concluded my involvement in some long-standing commitments, mainly: The Jessica Lee Band, the Phil and Jessica duo, the Joseph Campbell Lectures and the NY Mythology Group. And what's coming next?

~~~
In 2012, I will be announcing the exciting NEW birth of my all-time favorite musical project. (And here's a clue: I'll be following my bliss ;-)
"Follow Your Bliss": A Musical Farewell to the NY Mythology Group 02.01.2011
Phil Robinson After five years of active involvement, I've decided to step down from leading the NY Mythology Group, the monthly spiritual discussion group I founded five years ago, in order to 'Follow My Bliss' and focus on becoming a touring musical performer. (The group will continue on without me, in the more-than-capable hands of my successors...)
In the meantime, please join me for one final, music-filled night in which I'll lead the discussion, at Ciao Stella-- our cozy home in the West Village. I'll be celebrating with the group one last time, with a night of my original music, as well as some communal story-telling!!
EVENT DETAILS: HERE
I'll be singing my original songs throughout the night, and in-between, everyone in attendance is also invited to tell their own story of how they 'Follow Their Bliss'...!!    I hope to see you there for this bittersweet closing of a very beautiful five-year chapter of my life.
The NY Mythology Group is recognized as the official NY RoundTable of the Joseph Campbell Foundation, and has been a warm gathering spot for hundreds of questing New Yorkers since 2005.
Phil Robinson featured on 'Broken,' the new song by Jason Vitelli! 07.21.2009
Phil Robinson I'm excited to announce that I'm prominently featured on Broken, one of the songs on my good friend Jason Vitelli's newly-released album entitled,
No Photographs!
I was in love with this gorgeous song since I first heard Jason singing an early version of it a couple years ago. Jason was kind enough to let me try out some harmonica playing on it... The happy result is that the song now features my lengthy harmonica solo in its official recorded version!
Broken (along with the rest of the album) is available now on iTunes... and everywhere else-- Digital and physical versions abound!
~~~

Here's the video of us performing the song at Jason's CD Release Party:

The 'Phil and Jessica' Show! 06.19.2009

Phil and Jessica After playing in each other's full-on bands for the past couple of years, the amazing Jessica Lee and I have finally decided to try out a new format:
a two-person-only show, in the style of Johnny Cash and June Carter.

The Save Hayko's Benefit Concert! 06.09.2009

Phil Robinson For the past couple years, my favorite venue to play in New York has been Hayko's Turkish Carpets, the beautiful carpet showroom on the Upper East Side, which the Roomful of Sky creative community transforms by night into an unlikely-- yet magical-- modern day salon.

We've been holding living room-style concerts as well as other cultural events at Hayko's for the past three years. It's become our creative home in many ways and supports our thriving grassroots arts scene; yet, given the current economic environment, carpet sales are slowing down leaving our friend Hayko to seek out new ways to get the word out about his carpets...

Which is where we come in.

Please join myself and my musician friends-- Jessica Lee, Jason Vitelli, Bobby Kane, Noe Venable and all the usual suspects-- on June 13th. We've organized a high-profile benefit concert (at the expansive Meta Center!) to help get the word out about Hayko and his beautiful rugs. I hope to see you all there!

Details on the shows page.

Phil's Birthday Show-- All-Star Guests at Annual Birthday Bash!! 05.04.2009

Phil Robinson Audiences were treated to what became a 'Roomful of Sky All-Stars' show when Roomful of Sky label-mates Jessica Lee, Jason Vitelli and Bobby Kane (along with new friend Brandon Whightsel) joined Phil Robinson on-stage for his annual birthday show at Uncle Mike's in downtown Manhattan last month!

Phil decided to commemorate the occasion by turning his show into a celebration of the warm community of musicians surrounding him at Roomful of Sky Records. The night highlighted each guest's unique vocal style, as each singer sang individual verses and the ensemble harmonized together on the choruses.

~~~
The performance included spirited renditions of some of Phil's favorite songs, including Woody Guthrie's Hard Travellin' and Bruce Springsteen's If I Should Fall Behind, sung as a celebration of the real-life friendship between the musicians.
The highlight of the night was most definitely Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah in which the ensemble's gospel harmonies hushed the otherwise rowdy bar into silence and sent shivers through the spines of the audience.
A big THANK YOU to everyone who turned out to make this night a HUGE success!! What say we do it all again next year!?! :-)
The Collected Lectures of Joseph Campbell! 03.30.2009
Phil Robinson Big news! I've been selected by the Joseph Campbell Foundation (jcf.org) to edit and produce the new ongoing series of audio releases of The Collected Lectures of Joseph Campbell, which will be distributed through my record label, Roomful of Sky Records.
Joseph Campbell, of course, is the well-known mythologist whose work in comparative religion has earned him millions of inspired readers throughout the world, myself included. I've been a lifelong reader of Campbell and feel deeply privileged to work on preparing his talks for an even wider audience.
New Video - Hallelujah (by Leonard Cohen)! 03.18.2009
Phil Robinson We were lucky enough to capture a good quality video of this song from my show at Fortune Cookie Lounge last September!
Hallelujah is my favorite Leonard Cohen song-- a magical song, it somehow manages to be about love, death, sex and faith... all at the same time. I hope you enjoy my version of it!
New Web-Site Launched! 03.06.2009
Phil Robinson With all the solo shows coming up, it was time to give the site a much needed face-lift!
Now we'll have the ability to post show details, as well as a spot for news and other announcements, and also display our ever-growing collection of photos and videos in a quasi-sensible fashion.
Coming soon: the return of the lyrics section, drawings, and more!
